Mary directs the language exchange organization Language Partners BC, a community based version of UBC Tandem Language Learning Program, which she also founded. She continues to work on her own language fluency and language learning and teaching techniques.
Her background includes teaching English as an additional language at UBC, SFU, and at language schools abroad. As a tutor, she loves working with adults who want to learn basic Turkish, because this language is close to her heart.
Languages: English, Turkish, Moroccan Arabic, French (un peu), Spanish (un poco)
Expertise: Autonomous Learning, Classroom Teaching, Curriculum and Program Development, Workshop Facilitation, Writing, Social Integration, Language Exchange methodology and programming.
English Tutoring: One-on-one or small group English language tutoring to support you in your personal or professional life. A strong focus on listening skills, conversation, pronunciation, fluency, and the social side of English language. For adults or young adults.
Turkish for Travel: One-on-one, small group, or family lessons tailored to your plans in Turkey. Learn how to greet, shop, ask directions, and hold up a basic conversation. A little language goes a long way! Mary has spent years traveling in Turkey and learning Turkish, and wants others to have the best possible experiences.
Classroom Instruction, Curriculum Development, and Program Development: Mary has worked in these areas for government and university language programs, particularly for new immigrants and refugees. She is always interested in new proposals.
Language Exchange Program Creation: Mary founded and developed the first language exchange program of its kind at UBC in 2011, and it has grown to serve more than 1,000 people each year. If administrators, community partners, or individuals are interested in creating or supporting a language exchange program, get in touch.
