Authentic Cultural Materials for Spanish Teachers and Learners
What is it?
Zambombazo is a self-described “explosion of language and culture”. It is a website which offers hundreds of activities for Spanish learners and teachers that are based on authentic cultural materials such as music videos, artwork, comics, news articles, and more. It is set up as a blog so you can search by tag groups such as country, theme, grammar topic, and type of activity. I was very excited to see this activity based on one of my favourite music videos about Latin American identity:
Who is it for?
Spanish teachers and learners who want to move beyond textbook grammar lessons. Most resources include grammar activities but they are all based on music, art, news articles, and other authentic cultural works which help connect learners with the beautifully diverse Spanish-speaking world.
Why we love it
Zambombazo is easy to navigate and contains some really fun activities, many accompanied by beautiful art or videos which students love (many of my students continue to explore the site after I introduce it to them). It allows teachers to compliment the lessons they are already giving with activities that help connect the language and culture. A very fun feature of the site is the mapa musical – a map that shows where the songs they post come from and allows you to click to find the related resources.
